6 Years
Provide your child with praise, approval and attention.
Encourage independence, friendships and interest outside of the home.
Listen to and spend time with your child
The typical 6 year old:
* throws and catches a ball
* skates
* can ride a bicycle
* ties his shoelaces
* prints his first name, some letters and numbers up to ten
* knows right from left
* draws a person with six body parts
Establish rules to be followed at home with respect to: TV watching, bedtime, helping with chores etc.
Spend active time with your child.
Show interest in the child's daily school activities.
Work on communication with your child.
An adult should be present at home when the parents are absent. Encourage reading.
Be a parental role model.
8 Years
Provide your child with praise, approval, support and attention. Encourage your child's independence, friendships and interests
outside the home.
Be a good ethical and behavioral role model.
Provide suitable supervision when working or away.
Be consistent.
At this age the typical child:
* is able to tell time
* can read for pleasure
* has a sense of humor
* is concerned about rules * can take responsibilities for home chores
* enjoys interaction with peers
Eat a well balanced diet. Avoid junk food.
Engage regularly in physical activities.
Limit passive activity such as TV viewing and video games.
Practice bicycle, skating and skateboard safety.
10 Years
Provide good ethical and behavioral standards.
Set appropriate limits and make fair rules.
Have faith in your child.
Listen and understand what your child is experiencing.
Spend active time with your child.
Show affection.
A typical 10 year old child:
* believes he will do well
* has self confidence, a sense of mastery and pride
* enjoys interactions with peers
* has recreational outlets
* recognizes the need for rules and fair play * takes responsibility for homework
* is cooperative and considerate
Eat a well balanced diet. Avoid junk food.
Establish rules to be followed at home.
Engage in regular physical activities.
Observe bicycle safety precautions
Sex education at home / school is recommended.
